Overview
Six times each year, Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge offers a tour to Lighthouse Island where you can view two historic lights built in 1827 and 1857, respectively.
Winding 6 miles offshore through the estuary to the island is part of the adventure. Skilled naturalists will provide interpretation of the flora and fauna that surround the boat en route to the destination. Expect to see bottlenose dolphins, American oystercatchers, bald eagles, ospreys, pelicans, and a myriad of other species on this adventure.
When conditions allow, you’ll have the option of exploring Lighthouse Island to see the lighthouses up close! This portion of the trip is a true wilderness adventure, prepare to stomp through the marsh to get onto the island if the crew deems the conditions to be safe.
Whether viewing from the boat or up close on the island, this tour offers an exclusive look at a significant maritime landmark. The lights are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the 1827 lighthouse is the oldest of its kind still standing in the United States.
Prior to each tour, the lighthouse historian, Tommy Graham, gives a presentation about the history of the Cape Romain lighthouses the McClellanville Town Hall at the Boat Landing.

FAQ’s
Activity Level
This excursion is suitable for most abilities and ages. When we arrive at Lighthouse Island you have the option to stay on the boat with the captain.
We will approach the island and deploy a ramp from the boat and walk through a section of the marsh to get to the island. Please wear waterproof boots or shoes that will stay on your feet (not flip-flops!)
Once you are on the island, it is a short walk to the two lighthouses. When conditions permit, the white and black lighthouse will be unlocked so that you can look inside.
What To Pack & Wear
Pack a small backpack with drinking water, sunscreen & insect repellent and snacks!
Wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (muck boots are best, but you old tennis shoes work, too), a hat, long sleeves and long pants. During cooler weather, dress in layers. The insects can be fierce depending on the time of year– long sleeves are your best defense.
