We’re feeling the love—and so are the loggerheads!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the Amazon wish list for the Cape Romain Sea Turtle Team has been completely cleared. Every permanent marker, roll of tape, and pen you sent will be put to work this nesting season as our team sets out to monitor and protect one of the most important loggerhead nesting sites on the Atlantic coast. It was a small list, but it was necessary for the to prepare for the upcoming loggerhead nesting season.
We’ve already seen mature sea turtles in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge on our way to Bulls Island, so it won’t be long!
Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is home to nearly half of South Carolina’s loggerhead nests, with 2000-3000 nests laid each year on the refuge’s remote barrier islands. The work of the Sea Turtle Team is hands-on, hot, and often done in the dark—starting before sunrise and stretching into the heat of the day.
Each morning during nesting season, the team sets out by boat before dawn to survey the beaches, locate and document new nests, protect them with predator screening, and monitor hatch success throughout the summer. The supplies you helped provide—seemingly simple items like markers, tape, and clipboards—are absolutely essential for recording and organizing this critical conservation work.

Each nest holds about 120 eggs, and your $35 donation helps ensure their protection from the moment they’re laid until the last hatchling scurries to the sea. Adoptions are tax-deductible, and you’ll receive an official certificate along with updates throughout the season.
