In 2017, The Coastal Expeditions Foundation created the Veterans Sea Kayak Resiliency Program in response to the staggering statistic that 22 veterans commit suicide each day. In this 12-week program, participants learn resilience and coping mechanisms through connecting to their environment and each other.
Program graduates are invited to become part of the Coastal Warrior program and participate in ongoing environmental service projects in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Projects include trail maintenance, beach sweeps and boardwalk construction. Being part of the Coastal Warriors provides participants with a supportive community of veterans.
This program is free for local veterans through a generous Boeing SC grant.

Coastal Warriors
“Outside of the physicality, it’s the reconnection to community. When we’re in the military, we have our brothers and sisters in those trenches with us so we have that sense of community that we don’t seem to have when we transition out. The program helps to reconnect that for some veterans.”

Resilience Team

In 2017, Capt. Chris Crolley had an idea he had about dovetailing the skills you develop through sea kayaking to build mental resilience for veterans. Since then, it has grown into a supportive community of veterans participating in the program.
Through a generous grant from Boeing SC, this program is free for all participants and their families.
