COASTAL EXPEDITIONS FOUNDATION

Veterans Sea Kayak Resilience Program

Overview

The Veterans Sea Kayak Resilience Training (V-SKRT) is offered to veterans in the Charleston area twice a year. Over the course of this program, participants take part two pool classes and  several full-day expeditions into saltwater and blackwater ecosystems to develop sea kayaking skills.

Every other weekend during each co-hort, families from the program are invited to kayak at our Shem Creek location to involve loved ones in the program.

Taking the principles of sea kayaking and applying them to interpersonal development skills, this program focuses on PTSD recovery and learning how to help- and be helped- on the water and in life.

FAQ’s

Do I Need Kayaking Experience To Join The Program?

No previous kayaking experience is required!

Our program is designed for veterans of all skill levels. We will provide the necessary instruction and support to ensure you feel comfortable on the water. Whether you are new to kayaking or have some experience, our team is committed to helping you build skills, confidence, and mental resilience.

How Many Trips Will I Be Required to Attend?

The program typically consists of 12 trips, spread over the course of the training. This allows participants to build confidence, improve skills, and develop resiliency both on and off the water. While participation in all trips is encouraged, we understand that life can sometimes interfere, and we are flexible. If you are unable to attend one or two, please notify the program coordinator in advance.

What Should I Wear and Bring to Kayaking Sessions?

  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, moisture-wicking clothes, ideally layers. Quick-dry clothing is recommended, as you may get wet while on the water. Avoid cotton, as it can get heavy and cold when wet.
  • Footwear: Water shoes, sandals with a strap, or old sneakers that can get wet are best. No flip-flops, as they won’t stay on your feet while kayaking.
  • Weather-appropriate gear: Depending on the weather, bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. In cooler weather, a light waterproof jacket is also recommended.
  • Personal Items: Bring a water bottle, personal medications, and any other necessities you may require.

What Can I Expect To Gain From This Program?

The Veterans Sea Kayak Resiliency Training Program is designed to offer both physical and mental benefits. By participating, you can expect to:

  • Build confidence and self-reliance on the water
  • Develop stress-reducing skills through nature and mindfulness activities
  • Enhance your physical endurance and kayaking techniques
  • Foster camaraderie with fellow veterans in a supportive environment
  • Gain tools for improving your overall mental and emotional resilience

Community Involvement

Throughout the year, Coastal Warriors participate in service projects on federally-protected lands.  Creek sweeps, habitat restoration projects, trail repair and other group activities give veterans the chance to work together and give back.
