SALT MARSH & STORY FIELD TRIP

DOWNTOWN BEAUFORT

Overview

Boat Ecotour & Gullah-Geechee Experience
Grades 2–12 & college/continuing education

Where ecology meets culture on the water.
This two-hour field trip begins aboard our Coast Guard-certified ferry as students explore the salt marshes surrounding Beaufort. With naturalist guides leading the way, they’ll learn how this ecosystem works while scanning for dolphins, herons, and bonnethead sharks moving through the spartina-lined creeks.

The second half of the experience shifts to the human story of the Lowcountry, with a hands-on introduction to Gullah Geechee culture. Students will learn about traditional sweetgrass baskets—how they’re made, and the history they carry.

It’s a dynamic blend of science, culture, and discovery—delivered safely by experienced guides who make sure every student returns to the dock windswept, smiling, and full of stories.

Why We Love It

This trip weaves together two stories—the wild beauty of the salt marsh and the rich cultural heritage of the Gullah Geechee people. It gives students a deeper understanding of both the natural world and the human history that shaped the Lowcountry. Plus, spotting dolphins and learning how sweetgrass baskets are made? That’s a day they won’t forget.
