Overview
Nestled between the 66,306 acres of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and the 252,368 acres of Francis Marion National Forest is Awendaw Creek. This is literally where the land and ocean meet, creating a dynamic edge where the live oak and palmetto landscape ends and the saltmarsh begins. Wildlife like black skimmers, kingfishers, oystercatchers (and oysters!), fiddler crabs and dolphins make their home in and around this protected water trail.
After a 4-mile paddle (timed with the tides to help us along), we’ll hike the end portion of the Palmetto Trail known as the Awendaw Passage. The hike takes you through a diverse ecosystem supported by the over-story of live oaks, pines and palmettos.
Unique to the area, this trail is situated on a bluff that is about 20-feet above Awendaw Creek, giving you the chance to see far across the salt marsh. Along the way, we’ll identify the flora and fauna of this coastal habitat and talk about the history of this region.
