Where does the Bulls Island Ferry leave from?

The ferry departs from Garris Landing, located at the end of Bulls Island Road in Awendaw, South Carolina. It’s about a 45-minute drive north of Charleston. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before departure to allow time for parking and check-in.


How long is the ferry ride?

The ride to Bulls Island takes about 30 minutes, traveling through salt marsh creeks and tidal flats teeming with wildlife. Keep your eyes out for dolphins, ospreys, and bald eagles along the way!


What is there to do on Bulls Island?

Bulls Island is a haven for nature lovers. You can:

  • Hike the island’s 16 miles of trails

  • Explore the hauntingly beautiful Boneyard Beach

  • Birdwatch at the impoundments (over 275 species recorded!)

  • Look for alligators, bobcats, deer, and sea turtles

How long can I stay on the island?

Depending on the trip you book, you’ll have about 3–6 hours to explore. This allows plenty of time for hiking, relaxing on the beach, and wildlife spotting.


Is this a guided tour or self-guided?

The Bulls Island Ferry is a self-guided tour once you arrive on the island.

Naturalist-led guided tours are available, including private charters, kayak tours and sunrise expeditions.  School groups and nature clubs can also arrange field trips with the Coastal Expeditions Outdoor School.


What should I bring with me?

Here’s a handy checklist:

  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals

  • Water and snacks (there are no services on the island)

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent

  • Binoculars for birdwatching

  • A hat and lightweight clothing

  • A camera or smartphone for unforgettable shots


Are restrooms available on the island?

Yes! There are restroom facilities a short walk from the boat dock on Bulls Island. However, there are no facilities once you venture inland, so plan accordingly.


Can I bring kids?

Absolutely! Bulls Island is a fantastic place for children to experience nature up close. We recommend the self-guided trip for adventurous families or a naturalist-led tour if you want help spotting wildlife and understanding the island’s unique ecosystem.


Are dogs allowed?

No, pets are not allowed on Bulls Island. It’s part of a national wildlife refuge and home to many sensitive species, so dogs must stay behind.

• Naturalist guides on board the ferry and on the island educate visitors about interacting ethically with wildlife on the island to prevent unnecessary disturbance of nesting and resting birds, turtles and other wildlife
