2024 LEAP Interns Work with SCORE on Oyster Restoration
High school students working as summer interns at Coastal Expeditions worked with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) to built habitat for oysters through their SCORE program.

The Lowcountry Environmental Appreciation Program (LEAP) works with three Title 1 high schools- North Charleston, R.B. Stall, and St. Johns- within the Charleston County School District (CCSD).
The objectives of LEAP are to provide meaningful experiences in nature, increase science standards, and introduce students to a variety of jobs available in outdoor fields.
Our 2024 interns- Nia, Khamiiah, Ayleah and Vanna- have been working with our environmental partners, including Charleston Waterkeeper, Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, Coastal Conservation League, Center for Birds of Prey and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to learn different areas of conservation, outdoor education and ecotourism.
This week, LEAP interns worked with SCDNR’s SCORE program, building cages for habitat restoration in the salt marsh to create oyster reefs. This project gave them hands-on experience with a state agency learning about environmental jobs opportunities.
This paid summer internship program is supported by a grant from the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust.
The Coastal Expeditions Foundation works to connect students with the outdoors in meaningful ways. The LEAP program allows us to introduce students to jobs in the outdoor industry.
