ABOUT CAPERS ISLAND

Accessible only by boat or kayak, it’s one of the last remaining wild islands along South Carolina’s coast. Here, sweeping salt marshes give way to maritime forests of live oak and palmetto, freshwater ponds, and a “Boneyard Beach,”where weathered tree skeletons stand stark against the surf.

Protected as a State Heritage Preserve and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Capers Island remains untouched by development. Its diverse habitats provide a haven for wildlife—bottlenose dolphins cruise the creeks, egrets and herons stalk the shallows, and deer, raccoons, and alligators make their home inland. For paddlers, landing on Capers is like stepping back in time to experience the Lowcountry coast in its most natural state.

Activity Level

This tour is timed with the tides, but expect to paddle!  This is a full-day adventure in tandem (2-person) kayaks to a barrier island.  Once we are there, we’ll pull the kayaks onto the beach and explore the Boneyard and the maritime forest, taking a break for a beachside picnic.

What To Pack & Wear

Pack small backpack with bagged lunch, plenty of water, sunscreen & insect spray.

Dress for the weather.  We suggest layering with long sleeves and pants to protect from sun and insects, hat and sunglasses.  Wear shoes that can get wet and stay on your feet (not flip flops).

Cancellation & Weather Policy

This tour is non-refundable within 1-week of your scheduled date.

Because we are kayaking to  a barrier island, we keep a close eye on the weather—especially for things like lightning, thunder, or high winds. If our team decides it’s not safe to go out, we’ll contact you (usually at least two hours in advance) to reschedule or offer a full credit or refund. Your safety—and your experience—are our top priorities.

Tour Minium

This tour requires a minimum of 6 adventurers to launch. If we don’t reach that minimum before the tour date, we’ll reschedule or fully refund your payment.

Guide Safety & Training

Our guides aren’t just great naturalists—they’re also trained to keep you safe. All hold certifications in first aid, CPR, and lifeguarding, and they regularly participate in hands-on training to stay sharp. Our lead guides are certified sea kayakers through the American Canoe Association (Level 1 or higher), and our captains hold 100-ton USCG Master licenses.

The boats you’ll ride in? Custom-built for these waters and inspected annually by the U.S. Coast Guard—so you can focus on the adventure, not the logistics.

Gratuity

Gratuity isn’t included in your tour price, but it’s always appreciated. Our guides work hard to make your time on the water unforgettable—and if you feel they went above and beyond, a tip of 15–25% is a great way to say thanks. Totally optional, always appreciated.
