SOUTH CAROLINA OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
ANDREWS, SOUTH CAROLINA
Overview
River Kayaking on the Black River
Adventure meets education in one of South Carolina’s wildest places.
This field trip is more than a paddle—it’s a full day of hands-on learning, team building, and exploration. Designed for middle school students in Georgetown and Williamsburg counties, the experience combines Lowcountry history, environmental science, and physical education as students navigate the quiet beauty of a blackwater river.
Paddling through the heart of South Carolina’s newest—and largest—state park, students witness the biodiversity of the Black River firsthand. It’s a chance to build skills, deepen curiosity, and connect with the natural world in a way they’ll never forget.
Take your students on an adventure from the Black River Cypress Preserve that they won’t be able to stop talking about!
Why We Love It
This trip brings science off the page and into the paddle.
As students navigate the winding waters of the Black River, they’re immersed in a living classroom where biology, ecology, and earth science come to life. The blackwater environment offers a one-of-a-kind look at a freshwater ecosystem shaped by cypress swamps, tannins, and time.
But it’s not just about the science. Paddling challenges students to work together, push their comfort zones, and gain confidence in a new environment. It’s physical, it’s empowering, and it’s the kind of learning that leaves a mark.

What To Bring & Wear
Kids should dress for the weather, including a hat to protect from the sun. Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on their feet (Tevas/Chacos/sneakers).
Bring water, snack, towel and sunscreen in a small bag or backpack.
Guide Safety & Training
All Coastal Expeditions guides hold certifications in first aid, CPR and lifeguarding, and the lead guides are certified in ACA sea kayaking. As year-round leaders of day camps and school field trips, our staff is well-trained to keep safety at the forefront. Everyone wears PFDs (life jackets) while they are in the kayaks and around water.
Kayaks
Students will be in tandem (2-person) sea kayaks with a rudder system to help them steer. These kayaks are designed to be very stable and suitable for beginners.
Before we get on the water, Outdoor School leaders teach students about the kayaks, them to their boats and PFDs and lead them through on land instruction. Once we are on the water, Outdoor School leaders continue with gentle instruction, helping students adjust their paddling techniques to improve.
No prior kayaking or swimming experience is needed.
