LEAST TERN NESTING EXPEDITION
Overview
Boat Ecotour + Island Beachcombing
Join us for a remarkable guided experience to witness a nesting colony of Least Terns.
Our naturalist guides will lead you to a designated viewing point where you’ll observe these threatened seabirds court, nest, and care for their young while learning about their fascinating migration and the conservation efforts that help protect them.
Afterward, we’ll slow down for a guided beachcombing walk, discovering shells, driftwood, and the hidden treasures that tell the story of our ever-changing shoreline. This experience blends wildlife viewing, coastal ecology, and simple time to wander and wonder.
Perfect for bird lovers, nature enthusiasts, families, and photographers.

Protect South Carolina’s Wild Beaches
When you step onto places like Bull Island, you’re not just visiting a beach—you’re entering a living, breathing ecosystem where every footprint can make a difference.
From March to October, shorebirds nest in the sand and it is important that we do not disturb them or flush them from their nests. On this field trip, we’ll use good practices to prevent any flushing or disturbance.
MEETING PLACE
Coastal Expeditions at St. Helena Island
1928 Sea Island Parkway
St. Helena Island, SC 29920
From Hunting Island State Park, turn right and drive 5.9 miles. Coastal Expeditions will be on the left.
LOOKING OUT FOR WILDLIFE
On Coastal Expeditions tours, we are careful not to do any thing that interferes with a wild animal’s natural behavior. On our dolphin tours, we follow practices that are taught to us by the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network to ensure that we never cause Atlantic bottlenose dolphins or other any other wildlife stress.
Dolphins are curious and gregarious by nature, and when they appear near the boat, we cut off the engines and enjoy their presence.
