Dominick House Expedition: Bulls Island
Step into one of the most storied landscapes on the South Carolina coast. Just north of Charleston in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, Bulls Island is a seven-mile-long barrier island where ancient maritime forest meets windswept beaches and miles of tidal creeks. Accessible only by boat, this wild sanctuary is home to black skimmers, alligators, and one of the most dramatic boneyard beaches in the Southeast.
On this multi-day expedition, you’ll stay at the historic Dominick House, a weathered retreat built in the 1920s as a coastal hunting lodge. Perched among the live oaks, the house has welcomed naturalists, conservationists, and adventurers for generations—offering a rare chance to live inside a national wildlife refuge.
Now, it’s your turn. Join our guides for explorations through the island’s trails, waterways, and beaches, then return each evening to the comfort of the house. Meals, guides, and gear are included—you just bring your curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Inspiring
Amazed
Magical
From stunning sunrises to sensational sunsets, spending last weekend in the company of Nick, Morgan and MC on Bulls Island at Dominick House was nothing short of spectacular. This truly inspiring getaway proves that when the wonders of the natural environment are served up by smart, sunny naturalists, the result is unmatched mental medicine. Other highlights: Lovingly prepared, thoroughly Southern/Lowcountry meals shared with interesting fellow guests, plus bottomless coffee, sweet tea and snacks. Oh my!

Coastal Expeditions is a first rate outfitter. This was my fifth trip on the Dominick House Expedition on Bulls Island. Each and every time I have had a new experience. The guides hired by Coastal Expeditions are always first class. They are extremely knowledgeable, skilled and personable. Not to mention they’re good cooks. We don’t starve on this trip, that’s for sure. As an avid photographer, I am amazed at all of the wildlife that we encounter from a plethora of birds due to the position of Bulls Island on the Atlantic fly way to gators and sea life. This is an adventure not to be missed.

Hats off to Chris (our guide extraordinaire) for the educational and epic adventures. Chris fit a week’s worth of amazing sites into 2 and a 1/2 days. Activities began with sunrise beach walks and concluded with sunset/moonrise cruises. In between there were dancing dolphins, white pelicans, spoonbills and a double rainbow to name just a few magical sights.
Every outing is optional, but don’t sleep in, see the sunrise, take advantage of every moment. Thank you Abbi and Morgan for the delicious southern cooking (sausage gravy to die for) and for taking such great care of us. You and Chris set a tone of positivity that permeated our group. So fun to roam the island with such interesting people. Thank you Michael for sharing your bourbon after a long day.
All in all a perfect introduction to my “city boy” husband’s first camping trip. This weekend created memories I will cherish forever.
