FIELD TRIPS

Charleston Harbor Nature Quest

Overview

Boat Tour + Barrier Island Beach Walk
Grades K-12 (curriculum adjusted for each grade)

Take your students out on a field trip into Charleston Harbor for an interactive lesson of marine biology and regional history!

As soon as we depart the dock, the adventure- and learning!- begins.  Coastal Expeditions naturalists from our Outdoor School engage students with stories of the saltmarsh estuary during the 35-minute boat ecotour to Drum Island. We often see dolphins, bald eagles, pelicans, ospreys and other inhabitants of the saltmarsh along the way.  Landmarks like Castle Pinckney, Fort Sumter and the Charleston skyline add historical context to the tour.

Once we arrive at Drum Island, students depart from the boat and onto the beach for a nature walk along the shoreline examine shells, fossils and other biofacts with Coastal Expeditions naturalists.  Students can keep any fossils. that they find!

Why We Love It

This trip is adjusted to cover the science curriculum standard based with the idea that we will be introducing vocabulary and concepts that students will see again on standardized testing.  This hands-on experience in nature makes the concepts come to life for students.
