DANIEL ISLAND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

After School Jr. Naturalist • Ages 9-12

Overview

This 9-week program teaches kids everything they need to know to be skilled outdoor explorers in the Lowcountry! This program will introduce a variety of outdoor education and survival skills that will come in handy as they grow older and explore natural areas in the Lowcountry on their own.

Classes include:
Building a Fort
Knot-Tying for Sea Kayaking & Camping
Starting a Fire
Becoming Zero Waste: Home Switches That are Practical, Beautiful & Affordable
Participating in Sustainability Project
Map Reading
Cast netting & fishing
Kayak & Paddleboard Safety
Trip planning: Tides, wind, and navigation

Throughout each of these classes they will be learning these skills out in the field and will be a mix of going to barrier islands by boat, exploring the estuary by kayak, or staying on campus and participating in hands-on activities. In addition to these skills, they will be learning about the local flora and fauna through experiential education and exploration.

After completing the program, the students gain their beginner badge and after completing the program three times will receive their Coastal Expeditions Wilderness Certification.

Why We Love It

We see these kids as the next generation of conservationists, biologists and all around nature lovers. It’s our hope that Jr. Naturalists stay in touch and apply to be jr. counselors or future kayak guides at Coastal Expeditions!

FAQ’s

What To Pack & Wear

Kids should be dressed for the weather, including a hat to protect from the sun. Even if it is warm, a windbreaker is recommended for the boat ride. Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on their feet (Tevas/Chacos/sneakers).

Bring water, snack, towel and sunscreen in a small bag or backpack.

Guide Safety & Training

All Coastal Expeditions guides hold certifications in first aid, CPR and lifeguarding. As year-round leaders of day camps and school field trips, our staff is well-trained to keep safety at the forefront.  Children wear PFDs while they are on each daily expedition.

Our captains hold 100-ton master captain licenses from the USCG.  Coastal Expeditions boats are custom-built vessels that receive yearly inspections from the U.S. Coast Guard.
