SHEM CREEK EXPLORERS
GRADES K-5
This isn’t screen time. It’s creek time.
After school, we leave the concrete behind and step into open skies, tidal flow, and shoreline mystery. Shem Creek Explorers is built for curious young adventurers who learn best when the mud squishes underfoot and the next discovery might be a fossil or a fiddler crab.
Daily activities include: boat tours, barrier island exploration, fossil finding, scavenger hunts, crabbing & dip netting, nature-based crafts and games and (for older kids) sea kayaking!
Monday-Friday (pick only the days you want!)
Rain or shine, the classroom is ready: when weather turns, indoor stories, games, and projects take the helm.
Students at East Cooper Montessori should sign up through their website if you are utilizing after school transportation

What To Pack & Wear
Kids should be dressed for the weather, including a hat to protect from the sun. Even if it is warm, a windbreaker is recommended for the boat ride. Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on their feet (Tevas/Chacos/sneakers).
Bring water, snack, towel and sunscreen in a small bag or backpack.
Guide Safety & Training
All Coastal Expeditions guides hold certifications in first aid, CPR and lifeguarding. As year-round leaders of day camps and school field trips, our staff is well-trained to keep safety at the forefront. Children wear PFDs while they are on each daily expedition.
Our captains hold current master captain licenses from the USCG. Coastal Expeditions boats are custom-built vessels that receive yearly inspections from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Cancellation & Weather Policy
If there is a tropical storm, hurricane or other extreme weather event, we will cancel the after school program for that day. Otherwise, this program is rain or shine and we have protected spaces for indoor projects.
If you need to cancel, please give us 14 days notice to receive a refund.
About Shem Creek
Shem Creek isn’t just a location—it’s a classroom with currents, creatures, and stories. Here, learning is embodied: hands digging for fossils and eyes raised to osprey… It’s where childhood curiosity meets Lowcountry wildness.
Questions About Registration
Hi! This program can be confusing because of all of the options.
Basically, you are signing up by the month for an after school program. If you select Mondays, your child will come every Monday that month. If you choose multiple days, your child will come each week on the days you selected.
We also offer by-the-day when we have extra spots. This helps you if you’re in a pinch and need a helping hand.
