AFTER SCHOOL EXPLORERS

GRADES K-5 | SHEM CREEK

This isn’t screen time. It’s creek time.

After school, we leave the concrete behind and step into open skies, tidal flow, and shoreline mystery. After School Explorers is built for curious young adventurers who learn best when the mud squishes underfoot and the next discovery might be a fossil or a fiddler crab.

Daily activities include: boat tours, barrier island exploration, fossil finding, scavenger hunts, crabbing & dip netting, nature-based crafts and games and (for older kids) sea kayaking!

Each session is three months, but if you want to try it out or pick your days, you can sign up by the class!  Sessions are pro-rated, so feel free to sign up mid-session.

November registration is through the original booking system and is by the month. For future dates, sign up below on our new Outdoor School booking system!

What To Pack & Wear

Kids should be dressed for the weather, including a hat to protect from the sun. Even if it is warm, a windbreaker is recommended for the boat ride. Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on their feet (Tevas/Chacos/sneakers).

Bring water, snack, towel and sunscreen in a small bag or backpack.

Guide Safety & Training

All Coastal Expeditions guides hold certifications in first aid, CPR and lifeguarding. As year-round leaders of day camps and school field trips, our staff is well-trained to keep safety at the forefront.  Children wear PFDs while they are on each daily expedition.

Our captains hold current master captain licenses from the USCG.  Coastal Expeditions boats are custom-built vessels that receive yearly inspections from the U.S. Coast Guard.

Cancellation & Weather Policy

If there is a tropical storm, hurricane or other extreme weather event, we will cancel the after school program for that day. Otherwise, this program is rain or shine and we have protected spaces for indoor projects.

If you need to cancel, please give us 14 days notice to receive a refund.

About Shem Creek

Shem Creek isn’t just a location—it’s a classroom with currents, creatures, and stories. Here, learning is embodied: hands digging for fossils and eyes raised to osprey… It’s where childhood curiosity meets Lowcountry wildness.
