Turtle Patrol Update:
Week 15

As of August 27, 2025, we have recorded 1597 nests in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

HATCHLINGS, FLEDGLINGS, AND YOUNG EARTHLINGS

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: we’re investing in the next generation—hatchlings, fledglings, and young earthlings. It’s a hopeful act, whether our interns are relocating loggerhead nests to higher ground, or when we rebuilt Crab Bank with the dream that seabirds would return. The plan is always that life will take hold—but when it actually does, when the first tiny turtles break through the sand or the first birds nest on a restored island, it’s nothing short of overwhelming. We feel that same spark of wonder when we bring kids out on the water and see the light come on for them. These moments remind us that hope, when nurtured, becomes real.

One of our 2025 summer interns, Juanita Franco, experienced this hope during her time working with the Sea Turtle Patrol in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

End-of-Season Note from Summer Intern Juanita Franco:

There are not enough words to describe how amazing my summer internship experience was. Eleven weeks later, I can confidently say that I am no longer the same person I was when I first arrived. This internship shaped my education, my post-college path, and me as a person. I do not remember a single day being the same, and I believe that’s the most enchanting part of this experience.

Being able to witness both sea turtle nesting and hatching season was one of the most magical moments of my life. However, it did not end there—I also had the opportunity to work on the ferry to Bulls Island for Coastal Expeditions and as a Shorebird Steward. I gained valuable boat skills and learned about the rich biodiversity of Bulls Island. Moreover, sharing with tourists the importance of being conscious of the environment became one of my favorite parts. I believe that when people truly appreciate the environment and its living species, they are more likely to take care of it.

Finally, this internship gave me lifelong friendships and countless unforgettable experiences.
