The SC Aquarium Releases Sea Turtles in Cape Romain NWR

June 28, 2024

Coastal Expeditions is an environmental partner with the South Carolina Aquarium, providing boat service for a sea turtle release of Green and Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles and Diamondback terrapins. We were excited to return several turns home at the end of June 2024.

Ten year old Olivia Crolley, daughter of Coastal Expeditions’ owners Kari & Chris Crolley and a Jr. Naturalist at the company, was able to join Capt. Chris on a sea turtle release in late June.  She was excited about the return of several Green Sea Turtles into the protected waters of Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, and was particularly delighted when small green sea turtle named Muffin was brought to the helm for for their release.

The 66,000 acres of Cape Romain NWR are an ideal release spot for smaller sea turtles because it is a protected estuary with clean water and abundant food sources. This gives them the best chance to re-acclimate to the ocean after their time at the Sea Turtle Care Center.

Coastal Expeditions is proud to be a conservation partner with the South Carolina Aquarium, providing boat support whenever they need it!
