Real Outcomes for South Carolina’s Coastal Birds
Through the Coastal Expeditions Foundation, we’re looking for ways to protect South Carolina’s populations of coastal birds through community awareness and rookery island conservation. One of these islands, Deveaux Bank, has captured international attention because of a discovery that local biologists called “one of the most mind-blowing discoveries in the history of 20th- and 21st-century ornithology.”
We can’t tell the story as well as Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology did in their series of films, so we are including them here for you to see. We owe it to the world to protect this rich natural heritage of South Carolina’s coastal zone.
The Coastal Expeditions Foundation was founded, in part, as a way for the team at Coastal Expeditions to participate in the saving of another seabird sanctuary in South Carolina, Crab Bank. We knew that this would be the most important work of our lives and that there was a small window of time with the deepening of Charleston Harbor.
Crab Bank is an ecological success story that has been an incredible teaching tool for South Carolina students and the citizens of Charleston. Because it is positioned in Charleston Harbor, it reminds us that if we work within our communities and focus on something that needs attention, we can do big things to protect wildlife and habitats.
We are now focused on two more seabird nesting islands: Deveaux Bank and Marsh Island.
If you’d like to make a donation or learn more, we’d love to have you as part of the coalition to effect real outcomes.
