Kayak & Paddleboard Rentals: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

You can’t come to the South Carolina Lowcountry without seeing it by water. And one of our favorite ways is by kayak or SUP! Here are a few of the FAQ we get.

Where can I rent kayaks and paddleboards?

We offer daily kayak and paddleboard rentals at several of our locations, including Shem Creek (Mount Pleasant), Kiawah River, and Beaufort (St. Helena Island). Each location gives you access to beautiful waterways, wildlife, and a memorable day on the water.

Why rent from Coastal Expeditions?

• We’re Charleston’s original outdoor company and have offered rentals for over 30 years. From that experience we are able to provide the best gear and well-trained employees from private waterside locations
• A portion of every rental supports the work of the Coastal Expeditions Foundation. Your rental helps to get kids on the water, protect loggerhead sea turtle nests and support local veterans in the Lowcountry
• Coastal Expeditions has been voted Charleston’s Best Place to Kayak & Paddleboard year after year by the community.

What types of boats are available to rent?

  • Single kayaks (sit-on-top and sit-inside)

  • Tandem kayaks (great for families or couples)

  • Stand-up paddleboards (SUPs)

We’ll help you choose the right boat for your experience level and adventure goals.

Do I need experience to rent?

No prior experience is required, but you should be comfortable around water and have basic paddling skills. If you’re a beginner, let us know—we’ll give you a quick orientation before you launch.

What’s included with my rental?
Your rental includes:

  • Boat or board

  • Paddle

  • PFD (personal flotation device)

  • Safety briefing and local paddling tips

  • Help on and off the water at our private docks
  • Dry bag available upon request

How long can I rent for?

• Rentals are 2-3 hours.  Most people find that two hours offers the right amount of time to be sitting in a kayak.  If you’d like a longer rental, please give us a call at (843)884-7684.

Do I need a reservation?

Reservations are highly recommended, especially during weekends and holidays. Walk-ups are welcome when space is available, but you may have to wait to accommodate other reservations.

What should I bring?

We recommend:

  • Water shoes or sandals

  • Refillable water bottle

  • Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses

Are rentals kid-friendly?

Yes! Kids are welcome to join. We have youth-sized PFDs and tandem kayaks that are perfect for adult-child teams. Children 12 & under must be accompanied by an adult on the water.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely—well-behaved dogs are welcome on paddleboards and some kayaks. Just let us know when you book.

What’s the cancellation policy?

We offer full refunds with 24-hour notice. In the case of bad weather or unsafe conditions, we’ll work with you to reschedule or provide a refund.

Can I take the kayak off-site?

Most rentals are for on-site use only, but we may offer take-away options for experienced paddlers with appropriate transport. Call us to ask!

Do you offer guided trips too?

Yes! If you’d prefer a naturalist-led adventure, check out our guided kayak tours for a more immersive experience.
