Basic Kayak Safety Class

Join us for an informal get together on the deck at Coastal Expeditions (514-B Street in Mount Pleasant) for a informational session about basic kayak safety. We are offering two dates for this event: Wednesday, May 11 and Wednesday, May 25. Class starts at 6 p.m.; Children are welcome.
If you have a kayak or have been thinking about getting a kayak, then this is for you. Things that will be covered include:
- What to bring on every kayak outing
- How to dress and the right footwear
- Creating a float plan
- Looking at the tides, wind and weather
- Suggested creeks, estuaries and routes for beginners
- Real risks vs. perceived risks
- Follow-up on-water lessons (Kayaking 101)
Owner Chris Crolley and senior guides Aaron Moriarity and Geoff Caruso will be leading this discussion. It will be a laid back evening with a format that encourages questions from the group. We will be selling Coastal Expeditions maps and other gear that you may need for your kayak.
What To Bring
Bring a $5 donation for the Charleston Special Olympics Kayak Team. Coastal Expeditions is a sponsor of this excellent group of athletes, and guide Eric Mills is a coach. We will give the team all money collected from this community outreach event for them to purchase gear or use towards their competitions.
And if you can remember, grab a pen and notebook so you can take a few notes from this session. We’ll be providing a handout with an overview of the topics we’re covering.
