CEXy News- New Year’s Edition

Our In-House Weekly Newsletter That You May Find Interesting

Hi all my CEXyyy people! Happy New Year! I am looking forward to continuing all of our meaningful work of bringing people together in the outdoors and educating them about what we love so much!

We had a crazy busy last two weeks and everyone did a great job! We took a lot of families on charters into Cape Romain, to Morris Island, and from Kiawah River. We had also led full-day trips out to Capt. Sam Spit, Awendaw Passage and in the ACE Basin.

Liz had a great Captain Sam Spit tour out at Kiawah River. Out at the beach they were able to see several dolphins strand-feeding and great bird activity throughout the trip!

Capt. Al and Annie had a particularly great ferry trip out to Bulls Island. They observed a dolphin playing with its food and watched it throw a fish  around for several minutes. They also saw a peregrine falcon!

The winter camp was a success! The kids had so much fun out on Morris Island and Crab Bank looking for shark teeth and other fossils. On the third day, Olivia and Katie led a citizen science day where we picked up trash on Morris Island and contributed to dolphin observation research for our partners the South Carolina Aquarium to help monitor our bottlenose dolphin population. We had 4 separate observations and each included different behaving including seeing a dolphin strand feed next to Morris Island! Be sure to share the Aquarium’s Citizen Science app with guests so that they can participate!

We just posted a new trip going out on Saturday, January 9 to Sparkleberry Swamp in Rimini!  This is going to be a fun trip that we NEVER run for the public, so be sure to spread the word.

We are hiring new positions! Please share with friends that might be a good fit for Coastal Expeditions. We need several Naturalist Guides and an Administrative Manager.

Our Crab Bank Community Tours are continuing through this winter/spring starting with some FREE 2-hour boat cruises from our HQ on Shem Creek! Make sure to spread the word so that we can educate Charlestonians about the importance of this seabird rookery island.

Sparkleberry Swamp trip is coming up!  Get excited!

Check out this awesome article about “Onisecau” (Bull Island) through the lens of Bob Raynor.  He literally “wrote the book” on Bulls Island and is on the board of Friends of Coastal South Carolina.  It’s an interesting look at the history of this region and the Sewee Native Americans who inhabited the area prior to colonization.
