Some of the islands around Charleston are prehistoric, and we commonly find fossils of marine animals and shark teeth on their shores. We've got a good eye for spotting these oceanic gems, and we'll teach you the skills you'll need to find and identify these treasures on this kayak adventure.
Departing from our Shem Creek flagship store, our exploration of the estuary begins in the historic shrimping waterway. As we paddle past shrimp boats, we're likely to see several of the gregarious bottlenose dolphins that reside and play in these waters.
Once in the Charleston Harbor, surrounded by iconic views of the Ravenel Bridge, Fort Sumter, Patriots Point and the downtown skyline, we'll exit our kayaks to search a small island for different species of shark teeth, fish vertebrae, fossils and artifacts in the sand. Your guide will give you tips on how to "spot" shark teeth and identify the species of your treasures. Teeth from Great White, Bull, Hammerhead, Lemon, Sharp Nose, Black Tip, Mako, Tiger, and Prehistoric Megaldon sharks are often found in the waters of Charleston. And interesting fossils of sting ray "teeth," prehistoric camel and horse teeth- and even fossilized giant sloth claws!- can also be found along the shore.
The Shark Tooth & Fossil Kayak Tour is perfect for a parent-child or family outing. If you have been looking for an outdoor activity to do with your kids, this is one that is sure to inspire.
