Charter to Bulls Island with Gates Roll

This was my second exploration with Gates, and it was even better than the first! He is not only very knowledgeable about the island and surrounding marine life, he is also sensitive to the interests and physical capacities of an aging group of women. The day couldn't have been better!

Bulls Island Blast in South Carolina

What a wonderful day we had--dolphins surfacing to check us out, a mama alligator and two little ones at home in her pool, and, of course, the beautiful vistas all around. Very knowledgeable, always courteous, Gates Roll made this day so fun for all of us.

Couldn’t Get Any Better/Charter to Bulls Island

First - our guide Gates provided excellent support in our pretrip plans, answering all of our questions for our Charter boat trip to Bulls Island. The trip was awesome, we could hardly move through the vast Cape Romain marsh for all of the wildlife, dolphin, eagles, whimprels, egrets, oyster catchers and more! Gates stopped to answer all our questions quick to help us distinguish between birds in flight and on the marsh. Cape Romain is a treasure and our delight was multiplied by Gates' knowledge and expertise. The combination of his easy demeanor and obvious love for this remarkable place made for an unforgettable experience. Can't recommend it highly enough! Ask for Gates!

Santee River Trip

Coastal Expeditions, specifically Gates Roll, helped us plan an overnight unguided 15 mile kayak trip down the Santee River. It was an awesome trip - exactly what we were looking for.

If you're looking for a unique trip, give them a call and ask for Gates. He helped us think through things like tide, drop off, pick up, mapping, etc. He's easy to work with and can deliver exactly what you're looking for.

Big Sandy Island Tour via Ferry from Waccamaw NWR

It is about a one hour and forty minute boat ride from the Wacamaw NWR visitor's center to Big Sandy Island. Along the way we saw great blue herons, great egrets, little blue herons, snowy egrets, wood ducks and assortment of other birds. While we did not see any alligators first hand we did see their bubbles evidencing they were in the water around us. Once we landed we took the big loop tour and were blessed to physically sight 6 red cockaded woodpeckers and audibly sight 2 more. What are treat to see and hear so many birds of this endangered species. It was a great day for my wife and I. Captain Bill and mate Sam were also fun to be with as each was blessed with an array of life experiences that they shared with us. I would highly recommend this trip to those who have an interest in nature, birding and the outdoors. BTW, we did see alligators on the return trip.

Outstanding Afternoon in Cape Romain Refuge

We were on a family trip to Isle of Palms and wanted a break from the beach. On short notice we booked an afternoon boat tour of the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge. Our Guide, Capt. Gates Roll was phenomenal. He was knowledgeable, interesting, a great storyteller and absolutely committed to providing us with the most extensive wildlife experience that any of us could have imagined. I would recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in the water, the marsh, the Low Country, birds or dolphins. A truly memorable afternoon.

DuBose Reunion Boat River Tour

The whole trip was enjoyable because of our captain, Chris Crolley. He was knowledgeable, entertaining, & thought of our welfare first. He explained about the life vests, the fire extinguishers, & the capacity rating of the boat. He went to wonderful effort to make sure that our tour was for us, not what a company might think. He had a plan as to where we were going to go, but he looked to see what was attracting our attention. His explained about the wildlife, about the plant & treelife, as well as the aquatic life, but kept in mind about who we are, a family of DuBose, seeking knowledge of our ancestors. We also were able to see the Huguenot landmark from the boat which is sacred to our French heritage. He provided for each of us a bottle of water, not sure if that was part of the tour, but was very thoughtful. His charisma was exceptional & the tour was kept exciting during the whole event. My thanks to him & the company for providing a wonderful experience for the family reunion & for me. For those who are wondering about the tour, I would recommend it.

Bulls Island with Private Naturalist

I went on a three hour tour with my aunt and uncle. My uncle is an avid birder, and so he had arranged to have a private guide to go with us on our walk. Olivia was the naturalist for the ferry ride to and from the island. She was great! She provided all kinds of helpful information. Our guide, Geoff, was very knowledgeable both about history and biology. The island itself was fantastic! I could easily spend much more time there. Loved it!
